The Medina Charter: Values and Principles Underpinning the Concept of Civil Society
Keywords:
Medina Charter, Values, Principles, Civil SocietyAbstract
Civil society is a significant concept for fostering a social order grounded in justice, civility, and participation. From an Islamic perspective, however, civil society extends beyond notions of social freedom and autonomy to encompass moral responsibility, social justice, the rule of law, and respect for diversity. This article aims to examine the concept of civil society from an Islamic perspective by analyzing its normative foundations and the social values embedded within it. The study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review and descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that the Islamic conception of civil society is grounded in the integration of freedom, morality, justice, social responsibility, and inclusive communal life. The concept of ummah and the social practices of the Medinan community, particularly as articulated in the Medina Charter, demonstrate how these values were institutionalized within a religiously and socially diverse society. Accordingly, the Islamic conception of civil society remains relevant as a normative foundation for fostering a harmonious, just, inclusive, and civilized social order.
